Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm EDT
We'll work on the polka Memories of Ballymote key of G, which is today more commonly called the Church Street Polka. Excerpt from Fiddler's Companion website:
"A polka in the Sligo/Leitrim tradition (as opposed to the Kerry polka tradition). The tune was first recorded in New York by fiddler Paddy Killoran, originally from County Sligo, for Decca in 1937 (Deccda 12103, backed by Jim McGinn on piano). Memories of Ballymote is usually known under the Church Street title today, stemming from the influential recording by the Chieftains in 1964."

Learning The Music:
We formed a small group of adults who are new to the tradition who want to learn Irish dance tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas, etc.) that are often played in area sessions. We meet 1pm to 4pm on the third Saturday of the month from September through Febrary, April, and May.
To provide some structure, we select a popular session tune that is easy to learn, then slowly go through the tune phrase-by-phrase with the goal of nearly memorizing the basic melody by the end of the meeting. We often end with a slow session.
If you learn by ear, you will do fine. Reading music is helpful but not required. An audio recording device will be helpful.
Please understand that this tune-learning session cannot take the place of regular lessons with a tutor.
Please email us terry@terryhartzell.com if you are interested. It will be helpful to know what instrument(s) you will play.
Random Notes:
The subject of learning tunes is raised often on the forums. Here are links to discussion on thesession.org:
